Meta-validation of bipartite network projections

چکیده
Abstract Monopartite projections of bipartite networks are useful tools for modeling indirect interactions in complex systems. The standard approach to identify significant links is statistical validation using a suitable null network model, such as the popular configuration model (CM) that constrains node degrees and randomizes everything else. However different CM formulations exist, depending on how constraints imposed which sets nodes. Here we systematically investigate application these validating same network, showing they lead results even when significance threshold used. Instead much better agreement obtained density validated links. We thus propose meta-validation allows model-specific thresholds signal strongest, at time obtain independent way hypothesis formulated. illustrate this procedure data scientific production world countries.

Degree distributions of bipartite networks and their projections
Bipartite (two-mode) networks are important in the analysis of social and economic systems as they explicitly show conceptual links between different types of entities. However, applications of such networks often work with a projected (one-mode) version of the original bipartite network. The topology of the projected network, and the dynamics that take place on it, are highly dependent on the ...
متن کاملMETA-HEURISTIC ALGORITHMS FOR MINIMIZING THE NUMBER OF CROSSING OF COMPLETE GRAPHS AND COMPLETE BIPARTITE GRAPHS
The minimum crossing number problem is among the oldest and most fundamental problems arising in the area of automatic graph drawing. In this paper, eight population-based meta-heuristic algorithms are utilized to tackle the minimum crossing number problem for two special types of graphs, namely complete graphs and complete bipartite graphs. A 2-page book drawing representation is employed for ...
متن کاملOptimal Bipartite Network Clustering
We consider the problem of bipartite community detection in networks, or more generally the network biclustering problem. We present a fast two-stage procedure based on spectral initialization followed by the application of a pseudo-likelihood classifier twice. Under mild regularity conditions, we establish the weak consistency of the procedure (i.e., the convergence of the misclassification ra...

data envelopment analysis (dea) is a powerful tool for measuring relative efficiency of organizational units referred to as decision making units (dmus). in most cases dmus have network structures with internal linking activities. traditional dea models, however, consider dmus as black boxes with no regard to their linking activities and therefore do not provide decision makers with the reasons...
